Currency market review: Dollar firm versus rupee

KARACHI: Dollar strengthened against the rupee during the week, closed by gaining seven paisas compared to the closing level of previous week due to increased demand, treasurers said.

Dollar beginning the week at Rs.60.86 at buying and Rs.60.91 at selling, moved up to Rs.60.93 at buying and Rs.60.98 at selling at the close of the market on Saturday, gaining seven paisas over the level of previous week.

At the start of this week, rupee shed against the dollar and kept on losing against the greenback owing to the high demand of the greenback by corporate sector to clear import payments.

Pound Sterling strengthened during the week against the local currency and closed up at the end of the week. Starting the week at the level of Rs.119.03 at buying and Rs.119.23 at selling, it finally closed at Rs.119.85 at buying and Rs.112.05 at selling, gaining 82 paisas.

Euro strengthened and closed up against the rupee compared to level of last week on Saturday. It closed at Rs.80.47 at buying and Rs.80.67 at selling on Saturday compared to Rs.79.79 at buying and Rs.79.99 at selling level of last week thus gaining 68 paisas.

Open market: Rupee showed a trend of recovery against dollar here in the open market dealings this week. Rupee started new week on a firm note at Rs. 61.00 and continued it at close of markets by changing hands at Rs.60/90. Thus, rupee saw a recovery of 0/10 paisa against greenback this week.

Euro observed losses against rupee this week and stood as a loser on the currency desks. The single currency commenced new week at Rs. 79.50 and on Saturday, was changing hands at Rs. 79.30 thus showing an overall loss of20 paisa. On the international desk, euro gained this week against the dollar and yen after a report showed a surge in German business confidence.

The pound sterling gained mere grounds against rupee in the kerb dealings this week. The currency started new week at Rs. 118.40, scored mild gains and was changing hands at Rs. 118.45 at close of trading sessions on Saturday.
